Sleep Better…Work Better
It’s the middle of the work week. You’re already exhausted, dreaming about the weekend while at work. Then you start noticing that you are actually nodding off because you have been staying at work late and not sleeping well.
It’s National Sleep Awareness Week, and we want to help raise awareness to the importance of getting a good night’s sleep. After all, studies have proven that people who sleep more and better at night have better brain function during the day, allowing them to work better. Sleeping 7-8 hours a night permits your body to repair and reorganize itself, as well as think straight and reasonably (Interesting Engineering).
And according to The Tribune, sleeping well at night helps the mind and body avoid excessive daytime fatigue, stay alert and focused and it strengthens the immune system. That means less sick days away from work and more productivity when you’re at work.
The following are four tips to relieve stress before bed via The National Sleep Foundation:
- Work out at least three hours before bedtime to allow your body to wind down for sleep.
- Avoid any stimulating or stressful activity at least 30 minutes before you go to bed, including playing on your phone, watching intense TV shows or catching up on work.
- Take the last 10 minutes before you sleep to do a calming routine such as deep breathing or progressive muscle relaxation.
- Actively turn your mind and thoughts off when the lights go off by brain dumping any last minute thoughts or meditating to clear your mind.
