Out of the Ordinary: The Creative Design Process
We take pride in our designs at Mopdog, but they’re not usually born out of miraculous inspiration. To learn more about how design is created, I asked our fantastic designers a few questions.
Q: Writers often hit “writer’s block.” Do designers get “designer’s block?”
A: No. We don’t get any sort of designer’s block; instead, we hit walls. The difference being, with writer’s block you can usually brainstorm your way out of the problem. But when we hit walls, we can’t get through them. The only way to deal with hitting a wall is to take a break from what you’re doing and work on something completely different. Then, when you come back to the project you have a fresh perspective and are ready do great work!
Q: When you’re assigned a design, where do you start?
A: First, you’ve got to have a basic understanding of the industry the client is in. From there, gather the clients color palette and start writing everything down on paper, particularly the structure of the project. Brainstorming isn’t always applicable, but in this case, the client’s needs should always direct the flow.
Q: That’s a very professional answer, and I appreciate that. But what about design outside of client work? What’s a clever tactic that no other designer will tell me about?
A: Look at design throughout the years. Look at how things have usually been created and analyze every detail of its structure….and then forget all of it. One might even say you should spend just as much time uneducating yourself as you do educating yourself. It’s clichéd, but it’s true: think outside the box. Structure is important, but you should never let it limit you.
