Call to Actions: Get Tips on Writing them Well
A call to action can come in the form of a button or a written sentence, but regardless of format they both have the same overall goal of compelling the reader to perform an action.
CTA Buttons
A button may serve several purposes, incite the reader to make a purchase, download a PDF, submit information, click to learn more and anything else.
An effective CTA button will…
1. Draw Attention – Size is important here, you want people to actually see your button, but don’t make it so large that the content gets lost in it. Use white space to separate the button from other elements and make it stand out. Contrasting colors also help draw attention.
2. Have a Good, Prominent Position – At the top of the page, just below the important information or at the center of the layout. All of these are locations where buttons belong, make sense and will often be seen.
3. Deliver a Sense of Urgency – Make the reader feel like they have to click the button, that it’s now or never.

Written CTAs
Often times you find these in print materials, where a button would be ineffective.
An effective written CTA will…
1. Be Clear and Concise – Use clear and easy to understand language so the reader doesn’t have to guess or figure out what you’re trying to say.
2. Make the Reader Perform – Tell them exactly what do to. Are they calling you to schedule an appointment or are they visiting a website to learn more?
3. Provide all of the Information – If you want your readers to visit a specific page, be sure you provide the link. There’s nothing worse then making people work too hard and in turn you may lose their attention.
