What is your #Olympics Hashtag?
The long awaited 2012 London Olympics Opening Ceremony has arrived. The sports spectacular is promising some of the fastest swimming, most skilled gymnastics and all around excitement for each event. I know the summer Olympics are my favorite time of the year and I will be on the edge of my seat watching the Phelps and Lochte showdowns in the pool.
But there is more to this year’s Olympic games than great matchups and breaking world records. This year social media is on the scene and has grown immensely since the 2008 games. I was intrigued when I came across an article by Mashable, Why Social Media Will Reshape the 2012 Olympics, which sheds a little light on the statistics and social media influence by comparing 2008 and 2012.
Facebook –
2008: Facebook exceeded 100 million users.
2012: More than 900 million users are on Facebook.
Twitter –
2008: 6 million registered users.
2012: More than 500 million users.
YouTube –
2008: Users uploading 10 hours of content per minute.
2012: Users uploading 72 new hours of content per minute.
This year I know I will be following @London2012 on Twitter to get the up-to-date USA medal count and to see who is winning gold when I can’t watch for myself. I may even tune in on YouTube to see replays. The point is, everyone is using social media, even an age old tradition that began in Ancient Greece. If you miss an event and want to catch all of the action, you can find out instantly through Facebook, Twitter or even YouTube.
