Mopdog’s Resident Web Architect Realizes Dream of Gaming in Mass
Last week, three buddies (Ian, Hunter and myself) drove for more than 12 hours overnight to Dallas, Texas to fulfill one of my boyhood dreams. We pulled into the QuakeCon convention at 3:30 a.m. Thursday morning and did not rest until that night. The lack of sleep and bonding with the guys was actually part of the whole experience—the mass gaming experience.
QuakeCon is a convention held annually where thousands of computer gamers from all over the world travel to Texas in the middle of the summer to play on a giant gaming network, get a first look at the latest technology and compete in world-class tournaments. Because QuakeCon is BYOC (Bring Your Own Computer), it is the largest Local Area Network (LAN) party in the world.
QuakeCon was born from a desire by gamers to step out of the dark and play in person together. In 1997, QuakeCon had 650 attendees. In 2013, the enthusiasm had grown to 10,000 people. The weekend-long event includes open daily matches and master playoffs by professionals, with prize money ranging form $300 to $9,000.
This year, QuakeCon hosted the first tournament for a new team-based action game from BattleCry Studios. Participants were also treated to an exclusive sneak peak of the next Doom game from id Software and attended the 2015 Magic the Gathering Core Set release party. We registered in January to plan for this first-time experience. Now we are making this an annual trip and will be plugging into the QuakeCon network again next year.
