Hear from our Top Dogs, Cheryl & Bill Musial, in Honor of National Boss’s Day

In celebration of National Boss’s Day, we had the opportunity to sit down with our top dogs in charge, Cheryl and Bill Musial, to reflect on their journey, share valuable insights, and offer leadership guidance that continues to shape Mopdog’s growth and success.
How would you describe your leadership style, and how has it evolved over time?
Bill: I have never thought of myself as a leader. I want to be a good example if you put in the work and follow your heart, others will want to join in and make a difference.
Cheryl: I would describe my leadership style as collaborative. Over time, I’ve learned that true leadership isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about bringing people together, listening, and creating an environment where the best ideas can surface. Earlier in my career, I sometimes felt the need to “drive” outcomes myself, but I’ve grown into a leader who thrives on empowering others, aligning strengths, and sharing the wins as a team.
Looking back, what are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned as a leader?
Bill: Follow your gut and do what’s right, every time.
Cheryl: One of the biggest lessons is learning how to drive, thrive, and stay in my lane, or ask for permission before merging into someone else’s. That balance between being confident and humble has been key. I’ve also learned the importance of clear communication, setting expectations, and creating space for others to contribute their best work.
Which Mopdog projects or milestones stand out as your proudest achievements?
Bill: Turning a freelance business in the basement of my house in Detroit into an agency that has been supporting my family and others for 38 years.
Cheryl: There are too many to really choose just one, but I am most proud of being Topdog’s “wing girl” and supporting our shared vision of success. Every project where we’ve worked side by side as a pack, whether launching a campaign, building a brand, or reaching a major client milestone, represents not just an achievement but a moment of unity and shared purpose.
What fuels your motivation and passion for leading Mopdog? How do you continue to challenge yourself and grow as a leader?
Bill: I try to learn something new every day for work or personally.
Cheryl: My motivation comes from the incredible people I get to work with every day and the clients who trust us with their brands. What fuels me is seeing creativity and strategy come together to make a real impact. To keep challenging myself, I stay curious, I seek out new perspectives, embrace change in our industry, and invest in personal growth. Leadership is never “done”; it’s a constant journey of learning and adapting.
What’s the most rewarding part of leading and working with the Mopdog Pack?
Bill: Working with young people and watching them grow, while learning from them.
Cheryl: Hands down, it’s the people. Watching the team bring their unique talents, personalities, and creativity to the table is inspiring. The most rewarding part is celebrating those moments when collaboration clicks, when someone has a breakthrough idea, when we hit a big milestone, or when a client tells us we’ve made a real difference. Those wins belong to the entire pack.
Looking ahead, what excites you about Mopdog’s future and its role in the evolving world of marketing and communications?
Bill: I am an old Dog, I hope I can still learn a few new tricks.
Cheryl: I’m excited about the possibilities ahead as our industry continues to evolve. Marketing and communications are shifting faster than ever with technology, data, and creativity blending in new ways. Mopdog’s future excites me because we have the agility, the heart, and the talent to stay ahead of the curve while still keeping our authentic, people-first approach. I see us continuing to grow, not just in size, but in impact, helping clients navigate change and connect in meaningful ways.
Thank you, Bill and Cheryl, for your incredible insights into leadership and business.
