Mopdog Warns Clients to Take Action and Avoid Dire Consequences

We know. It seems like only yesterday Mopdog was advising clients about the latest update to WordPress. But this week, version 4.2.3 became available, which fixes 20 bugs from version 4.2.

The WordPress 4.2.3 Security and Maintenance Release states, “WordPress versions 4.2.2 and earlier are affected by a cross-site scripting vulnerability, which could allow users with the Contributor or Author role to compromise a site…We also fixed an issue where it was possible for a user with Subscriber permissions to create a draft through Quick Draft.”

1. At the bottom of the admin panel (left-hand navigation bar) look for ‘BackWPup.’

If this option is not available, then you do not have admin access.

2. After clicking ‘BackWPup,’ check the last logs for a recent backup with the status ‘OK.’

3. Return to the main admin dashboard, to see what WordPress version is running.

If your current version is 4.0 or greater, then you should be clear to update to version 4.2.3.

If your current version is below 4.0—Call Topdog, Bill Musial, at 678.737.7333.
(Our web maintenance team has a different process—using extreme caution—when updating an old version.)

Schedule a Maintenance Plan
The Mopdog team has  noticed that after delivering WordPress websites to many clients, the backend versions become outdated within months. These lapses make companies and organizations vulnerable to hacking. WordPress regularly institutes fixes, but it is often left to individual website owners to install the necessary patches.

Remember, WordPress Version 4.3 Releases Aug. 18
Mopdog’s developers are already preparing for the roll out of the latest WordPress version. According to WordPress.org, WordPress 4.3 is designed around “enabling users of touch and small-screen devices,” as well as allowing more control over media elements. Still, the ultimate reason to update to WordPress 4.3 is to ensure your website is functioning and communicating correctly behind the scenes. And, version 4.4 is already in the works!

Preventing an attack is far easier than correcting a problem after a hack. Contact Bill Musial, at [email protected], to create a proactive maintenance schedule.
