‘Star Wars: The Fanbase Awakens’
To many movie fans, Christmas is coming twice in December. A week before ol’ Kris Kringle climbs down chimneys across the globe, a brand new Star Wars movie will be arriving in theaters everywhere.
Of course, this isn’t exactly news to most people. Movie fans have been buzzing about Star Wars: The Force Awakens since Thanksgiving 2014, when the very first teaser trailer made it’s way into theaters and online. I even rushed to my television, plugging my laptop into the ‘big screen,’ to watch the very first trailer for the new Star Wars movie in high definition.
To say I freaked out when the first new footage in 30 years of the Millennium Falcon appeared on screen would be an understatement. It felt like a true throwback to my childhood, watching the original trilogy on VHS tapes. This is why Star Wars: The Force Awakens is so highly anticipated.
Since last year’s teaser, two more trailers have been released. But, according to Disney, that’s all we’re getting. If this were any other movie, we’d have seen so much more by now. However, this movie doesn’t need that.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a true event film. This franchise spans multiple generations. My grandparents were fans of the original Star Wars trilogy, my parents have seen every episode of Star Wars, and I am a Star Wars superfan. It’s because of this cultural feat that Star Wars can remarket itself (based on nostalgia), and still reach new levels of hype in doing so.
Since I wasn’t actually born when the first Star Wars movie came out in 1977, I went to talk to Martin Steib, Mopdog’s resident film director. Martin, who’s really our Senior Multimedia Director, revealed to me his honest feelings about the new movie. “It’s all about youth, really,” he said. “It all reminds me of when the first movie came out. I was 12 years old, and I saw Star Wars about four times in the theater.”
Of course, Disney and Lucasfilm have used promotional posters and a grand merchandising campaign to help push this latest movie, but they arguably never needed to. Star Wars brings the nostalgia factor to people who saw the original trilogy in theaters, and it appeals to people like me, who fell in love with the movies later, but long for that original theater experience.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens Friday, December 18.
